Provenance and AI

Two questions worth answering before anyone has to ask: where the pictures come from, and where the artificial intelligence is. OVREL publishes two different kinds of print and the answers are not the same for both, so they are set out separately.

Archive Edition — reproductions

Every Archive Edition print reproduces a real, physical object: a Japanese woodblock print held in a museum collection, cut and printed by hand long before anyone had a computer. The file we print from is the museum's own photograph of that object. Nothing in this edition is generated, upscaled from a prompt, redrawn, or "in the style of" anybody, and every product page links to the museum's public record for the exact object it was printed from, so you do not have to take our word for it.

The artworks are in the public domain. The images are published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art under its Open Access programme, which places them under Creative Commons Zero for unrestricted use, including commercial use.

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or in any partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We name it because accurate attribution is the honest thing to do and because it lets you check the source. The Museum has no involvement in this store and no responsibility for it. We sell the physical print; we did not make the artwork and we do not claim to have.

Studio Edition — OVREL originals

Studio Edition prints are OVREL's own work. They are not reproductions of anything in a museum, they are not public domain, and copyright in them stays with OVREL. Buying one is buying a print for personal display, not a licence to reproduce it.

Where the AI is on this website

This website was designed and built with AI assistance, and product descriptions on this store are AI-drafted and reviewed by a person before publication. We would rather say so plainly than have you work it out.

No AI is used to alter, restore, colourise or enhance any Archive Edition artwork. The image that goes to the printer is the museum's photograph, cropped to the sheet size you chose and otherwise untouched.
